Critical Race Theory: Race and Racism (in Education)
In this course, we will focus on how critical race theory (CRT) can be used to examine and deconstruct race-based disparities and inequalities in society in general, and in K-12 and postsecondary education institutions in the U.S. Some of the overall goals of the course will be to examine the usefulness of CRT as tool to:
Interrogate the underlying factors that cause racial disparities in society and education.
Explore why these inequalities persist; and explore viable resolutions to such inequalities.
We begin the course by examining CRT's roots and original tenets in critical legal scholarship
(which examine the experiences of African Americans and others society deems as Black),
and then its offshoots (which examine the experiences of people of color including Latinx,
Asians, and Native Indians, as well as Whiteness) and how these apply to interpreting and
interrogating educational disparities. In short, the aim is to use CRT as an analytical
framework that provides race-based epistemological, methodological, and pedagogical
approaches to the study of everyday racial inequalities within and beyond education.
