Position Description

The Explorations into Diversifying Engineering Faculty Initiative (EDEFI) team led by Dr. Ebony O. McGee, Professor of Education, Diversity and STEM Education in the Dept. of Teaching & Learning, and William H. Robinson, Ph.D., Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering is looking to hire a research assistant. EDEFI team is working on three NSF-funded research projects aimed at improving the experiences and career possibilities of underrepresented students of color in engineering and computer science. The research team is searching for a qualified candidate to assist with duties surrounding these projects.

  • Scheduling phone interviews with STEM participants

  • Conducting interviews with the assistance of a senior EDEFI member

  • Data processing (e.g., downloading and uploading audio files, copying and scanning participant documents, preparing equipment for interviewing)

  • Conduct Literature Reviews

  • Taking an active role in central research tasks such as coding interviews in NVivo

This is an hourly graduate research analyst/program support position paying $18/hr. This position does not include tuition/benefits. Position to start immediately.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position should bring the following competencies:

  • Prior experience with qualitative data collection and analysis

  • Familiarity with Qualtrics, NVivo, and/or other data management and analysis software is a plus!

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

Quantitative Research Assistant

Position Description

The Explorations into Diversifying Engineering Faculty Initiative (EDEFI) team led by Dr. Ebony O. McGee, Professor of Education, Diversity and STEM Education in the Dept. of Teaching & Learning, and William H. Robinson, Ph.D., Associate Dean and Professor of Electrical Engineering is looking to hire a research assistant. The EDEFI team is working on several NSF-funded research projects aimed at improving the experiences and career possibilities of underrepresented students of color in engineering and computer science. The research team is searching for a qualified candidate to assist with duties surrounding these projects, particularly a project led by Principal Investigator (PI) McGee on a national survey on doctoral students of color that is mid-way through data collection.

  • Managing data collection 

    • Communicating with advertising agency for participant recruitment via LinkedIn

    • Monitoring participation via Qualtrics 

    • Running descriptive statistics (e.g., R, STATA, SPSS) to manage sample size of participant sub-groups

    • Ensuring participants are awarded gift cards 

      • Submitting participation twice a week to department administrative staff

  • Completing annual National Science Foundation reports regarding the progress and status of funded projects

  • Managing tasks related to the Institutional Review Board 

    • Certification in CITI (Collaborative IRB Training Institute) training 

    • Submitting 1) annual continuing review reports and 2) amendments in the event of changes made to the survey 

    • Maintaining compliance with IRB standards 

  • Attending regular meetings with Principal Investigator, Dr. Ebony McGee, and other team members to discuss project 

  • Generating paper ideas, creating literature reviews, running statistical analyses (e.g., regression), co-authoring quantitative papers

Quant Research Asst

Social Media Research Assistant

Position Description

The Social Media Research Assistant will actively engage multiple audiences via social and mobile media to increase visibility, interactivity, and brand awareness. This position manages and executes day-to-day activity of The Explorations into Diversifying Engineering Faculty Initiative (EDEFI) team led by Dr. Ebony O. McGee, Professor of Education, Diversity and STEM Education in the Dept. of Teaching & Learning and William H. Robinson, Ph.D., Associate Dean and Professor of Electrical Engineering. Responsibilities include the social media promotion of our website - https://blackengineeringphd.org/ - and related social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram). 

 

Using social media to drive users to the EDEFI’s website, promote related research, promote events, new publications and new video content, increase the sense of connection to the group in its extended community, and ensure that communications are aligned with the group’s brand messaging and policies. An appropriate candidate will be a self-starter who is passionate and knowledgeable about the social and cultural implications of technology. Strong skills in writing, organization and academic research are essential, as are time-management and multi-tasking.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Develop, implement, and manage social and mobile communications to include:

  • Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other Web-based and mobile social sites. 

  • Create and maintain the overall and day-to-day social and mobile media presence, including page design, photos, and graphical elements. 

  • Use videos, photography, tweets, text, and blogs to advance goals in social media. 

  • Support the creation of visual graphics and eye-catching text and visuals for materials to be shared on social media 

  • Write compellingly and accurately and show attention to detail. 

  • Report activity and progress in clear and concise formats. 

  • Other duties as assigned
